North West Passage End 6: Crossing Buffin Bay To Disko Bay, Magic Greenland

Dall’uscita dell’arcipelago Canadese il NWP vero e proprio è completato, attraversiamo il golfo di Baffin sino ad Aasiaat ove Lifexplorer sarà tirato in secca come i pescherecci locali su una slipway, Qui nell800 non era facile navigare senza restare restare bloccati. Negli ultimi 20 anni i pescherecci escono, rompendosi il ghiaccio ridotto, quasi tutto l’anno.

Questa è la zona di grandi iceberg di montagna, spessi anche 1000 metri, da non confondere con il vecchio ghiaccio di banchisa polare che ci ha complicato la vita in Alaska e nel Canada orientale.

Dedichiamo un po’ di tempo per fotografarli nella loro imponenza e colorazione.

Once clear of the Canadian archipelago, the Northwest Passage proper is complete, and we sail the Baffin gulf to the town of Aasiaat in Greenland. In the last twenty years, fishing boats have been able to head out and fish by breaking through the ice, which is now reduced for most of the year.

This is a region of massive, towering mountain icebergs—some up to 1,000 meters thick—which should not be confused with the old polar pack ice that made things difficult for us in Alaska and Eastern Canada.

We take some time to photograph them, capturing their sheer scale and striking colors.

Disko bay con i suoi immensi ghiacciai e gli iceberg che la popolano è meravigliosa, ed i più piccoli villaggi altrettanto. Le navi da crociera però qui arrivano numerose.

La popolazione Inuit è come nelle altre zone artiche sempre delicata e spesso accogliente.

Disko Bay, with its immense glaciers and the icebergs that dot its waters, is magnificent, as are the smaller villages. However, large numbers of cruise ships arrive here.

The Inuit population—like those in other Arctic regions—is sensitive and often welcoming.

Alla base del grande ghiacciaio di Ilulissat, si distende verso l’interno un infinita visione di ghiaccio, qui si conserva la gran parte di ghiaccio dell’emisfero nord. Nel corso della passeggiata per la magica vista, compaiono avanzi di recenti prede.

At the base of the great Ilulissat glacier, an endless expanse of ice stretches inland; the vast majority of the Northern Hemisphere’s ice is preserved here. As you walk along, taking in the magical view, the remains of recent prey come into sight.

Dopo vari incontri con balene e foche, ci impegniamo per fare qualche bella foto e video, Tortello e Anusofia operano con drone e macchina fotografica, ma come spesso accade hanno grossi problemi, terminati i nostri giri di boa intorno all’ iceberg, almeno 5 doppi passaggi, vediamo che l’atterraggio è colmo di tensione ed i tentativi si susseguono. Chiediamo siete soddisfatti infatti sole e passaggi ci sembravano eccitanti, invece erano distrutti, una volta piazzato il drone sopra l’iceberg Anusofia, il nostro pilota fotografo ufficiale, ha perso la visione ed il controllo che è tornato solo per un passaggio.!!!Vediamo cosa è uscito.!!?

Quando vedrete qui sotto l’ultimo video nella versione light web, rimarrete a bocca aperta, il drone in quel momento era perfettamente centrato, ed oltre al nostro passaggio in boa, quasi da coppa America, nello stesso passaggio sull’iceberg, sul quale scorreva la nostra ombra(senza che ce ne accorgessimo), questo ha perso un pezzo alla nostra entrata e nel pieno del nostro passaggio si è staccato un altro pezzo con un tonfo sordo tipo sbattimento della vela. Il tutto senza che Anusofia ed anche noi ci rendessimo conto. Il video è assolutamente reale, meraviglioso e non contiene alterazioni, unicamente una semplice minima correzione di contrasto. Considerando il falso e vuoto mondo della AI attuale, è un bell’esempio di perseveranza, fortuna e bravura.

After several encounters with whales and seals, we set out to capture some great photos and videos; Tortello and Anusofia were operating the drone and camera, but—as often happens—they ran into major difficulties. After we finished circling the iceberg—making at least five double passes—we could sense the tension surrounding the landing attempts. We asked if they were satisfied, as the sunlight and the passes had seemed thrilling to us, but they were actually devastated: once the drone was positioned over the iceberg, Anusofia (our official pilot and photographer) lost the video feed and control, regaining it for only a single pass! Let’s see what the footage looks like!

Beyond our rounding of the buoy—reminiscent of the America’s Cup—there was the moment we passed the iceberg, with our shadow gliding across it (unnoticed by us). The iceberg shed a piece just as we approached, and another chunk broke off with a dull thud—sounding like a sail flapping—right as we were passing by. All of this happened without Anusofia and we also even not realizing it. The video is completely authentic and stunning, with no alterations other than a simple, minor contrast adjustment. In an era dominated by the artificial and hollow nature of AI, this stands as a fine example of perseverance, luck, and skill.
